Colic can leave even the calmest parent feeling helpless. Hours of crying, sleepless nights, and advice that boils down to “wait it out” do not give you the answers you need. The truth is that colic is not forever, and it is not unsolvable.
There are insights that rarely make it into a rushed pediatric appointment but can change the way you understand and respond to your baby’s crying. These are the three secrets I wish every parent knew.
Secret 1: Colic is not a diagnosis
Colic is a word doctors use to describe excessive crying, but it is not the root problem. It is a clue. Babies with colic may actually be dealing with reflux, food sensitivities, gas, or an immature digestive system. Sometimes it is more than one of these at the same time. When you understand that colic is a symptom and not a final answer, you start looking for what is really going on. That is where relief begins.
Secret 2: The gut and the nervous system are connected
When a baby’s gut is uncomfortable, the nervous system goes into overdrive. The crying gets louder, the body tenses, and digestion becomes even more unsettled. It turns into a cycle that feels impossible to break. Supporting both systems at the same time is the key. That might look like soothing techniques to calm your baby’s body while also addressing feeding or digestion triggers. When you work on both, you stop the spiral.
Secret 3: Soothing works best in layers
There is no single trick that magically ends colic. What works is stacking proven techniques together. A baby who is swaddled, held with gentle motion, soothed with white noise, and given tummy massage has a much better chance of calming than a baby who is offered only one of those things. Think of it as layering comfort. The more layers you provide, the safer and calmer your baby feels.
The bottom line
Colic does not mean you have failed. It means your baby needs help finding comfort while their little body figures things out. Your pediatrician wants the best for your child, and so do I. My role is to give you the missing pieces and the everyday tools you can use at home.
