Hello again, friends! It’s wonderful to be back on the blog after a bit of a pause—and for a very good reason: I’ve been on maternity leave after welcoming our beautiful third baby. While every birth has been different, this one was unexpectedly challenging and traumatic, reinforcing my mission in ways I could never have anticipated.
About a week postpartum, when I should have been cuddling my newborn and adjusting to life with three little ones, I started feeling “off.” Thanks to my experience as a maternal-newborn nurse, I recognized troubling symptoms of infection and retained placenta. Trusting my instincts, I sought medical attention immediately. Yet, even with my professional background, my concerns were initially dismissed by a healthcare provider who was ready to send me home. I had to advocate fiercely for myself and thank goodness I did.
I was admitted urgently, needed IV antibiotics, and underwent surgery to remove the retained placenta—during which I hemorrhaged significantly. Looking back, it’s chilling to realize how differently this could have ended had I not spoken up and insisted on being heard. The truth is, even medical professionals can be dismissed. And if it can happen to me, it can certainly happen to any parent.
This experience has profoundly reinforced my mission here at The Colic Consultant. Just as I had to advocate strongly for myself, I’m here to empower you to advocate tirelessly for yourself and your little ones, especially when navigating the confusing and often overwhelming world of infant colic and newborn care. Trust your gut, use your voice, and don’t stop advocating until you’re truly heard. Doctors and healthcare providers are doing their best, but they’re human too—and no one knows your baby or your body better than you.
Together, let’s continue supporting each other in finding our voices and fighting for the care we and our precious little ones deserve.
